ESA Fonts for Hatch Embroidery: Installation, Compatibility & Use

ESA fonts let you type embroidered lettering in compatible software using a font designed for stitching. If you have downloaded an ESA font and are wondering where the file goes, why it does not appear in Hatch, or how it differs from a regular computer font, this guide will walk you through it.

Digitizing With Love ESA fonts are compatible with Hatch Embroidery version 3 and newer, and Wilcom EmbroideryStudio e4.5.6 and newer. They are not compatible with Hatch 1 or 2. These requirements refer to the fonts sold by Digitizing With Love; another seller's ESA files may have different requirements.

What is an ESA embroidery font?

An ESA file is an embroidery lettering font used by compatible Hatch and Wilcom software. Its letters have been digitized for embroidery. You select the font in the software's lettering tool, type your text, and adjust the lettering in your design before producing a machine stitch file.

An ESA font is not itself a PES, JEF, DST, or other machine-ready design file. You create the lettering in compatible embroidery software, then export the finished design in the format your machine uses. It is also different from a set of individual alphabet designs that you insert one letter at a time.

Check the product listing before purchasing. The listing describes the font's characters, design features, and any stated size range. ESA files also require compatible software; they cannot be installed directly on an embroidery machine.

How to install an ESA font in Hatch 3 or Hatch 4

The same third-party font folder applies to Hatch 3 and Hatch 4. Hatch's support instructions identify it as:

C:\ProgramData\Wilcom\Hatch Embroidery\FONTS

  1. Download and extract the font package. If you received a ZIP file, open or extract it first. Locate the file ending in .ESA or .esa.
  2. Close Hatch if it is running.
  3. Open File Explorer and paste C:\ProgramData\Wilcom\Hatch Embroidery\FONTS into its address bar. Press Enter. ProgramData is normally hidden, but entering the full path can take you directly to it.
  4. Copy the ESA file into the FONTS folder. Copy the actual .ESA file, not the ZIP archive or a preview image.
  5. Start Hatch again. Open the lettering tool and look for the font in its font list. The name displayed in Hatch may differ slightly from the ZIP filename; check the information included with your purchase.
  6. Type a short sample and inspect it in the software before saving your design.

Hatch's published installation guide confirms that third-party ESA fonts go in this folder for Hatch 3 and Hatch 4 and that Hatch must be restarted after copying the file. Read Hatch's font installation instructions.

What if I cannot find ProgramData?

C:\ProgramData is a hidden Windows folder. Paste the complete path above into File Explorer's address bar. You can also enable View → Show → Hidden items in File Explorer and navigate to the folder manually. If your Windows installation uses a different system drive, use that drive letter in place of C:.

How to use the font after installation

Create or open a design in Hatch, choose its lettering tool, select your newly installed ESA font in the font list, and type the name or phrase. Adjust the lettering size and spacing for the project, inspect the result, and save the editable design. When it is ready for your embroidery machine, export the completed design in a stitch format supported by that machine.

For reliable results, check the recommended size range on the individual product page. A font that works beautifully at one height may need a test sew-out or adjustments at a substantially different height, especially when the letters contain fine details. Test on similar fabric and stabilizer before stitching the final item. Hatch likewise advises using embroidery fonts within their recommended size ranges. Why is my ESA font not showing in Hatch?

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Version: For a Digitizing With Love font, confirm that you are running Hatch 3 or newer. Hatch's general documentation mentions older Hatch releases, but our fonts are not compatible with Hatch 1 or 2.
  2. Extraction: Make sure the .ESA file has been extracted from its ZIP archive.
  3. Folder: Confirm that the .ESA file itself is in C:\ProgramData\Wilcom\Hatch Embroidery\FONTS, rather than in Downloads or a nested ZIP folder.
  4. Restart: Close and reopen Hatch after installing the font.
  5. Duplicates: Look for another copy of the same ESA font in a Wilcom font folder. Hatch warns that duplicate ESA files can prevent a font from displaying. Do not move or delete built-in program files while troubleshooting.
  6. Font name: Search the font list for the font's displayed name, which may not exactly match the name of the downloaded ZIP file.

If the font still does not appear, contact us with the font name, your exact Hatch version, and a screenshot of the extracted files and installation folder. That information helps us identify the issue quickly. Hatch also documents the duplicate-file problem.

ESA vs TrueType: what is the difference?

A TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) font is primarily a computer font. When you use one in Hatch, the software creates stitches from the letter shapes. The result depends on how suitable those shapes are for embroidery, so a test sew-out matters.

An ESA embroidery font contains letters digitized for embroidery and is selected through compatible embroidery software's lettering tools. The two formats install differently: a TTF is installed in Windows, while a third-party ESA file is copied to Hatch's FONTS folder. Hatch explains this distinction in its font guide.

ESA vs BX vs individual stitch-file alphabets

These labels describe different ways of working with embroidered lettering:

BX font Use the BX file in compatible Embrilliance software to type lettering. A BX file is not an ESA font for Hatch.
PES/JEF/DST alphabet Insert individual letter designs in compatible software or on a machine, according to the files provided. These stitch files do not automatically become an ESA font.

Some product downloads may offer more than one format. Read the particular product listing to see exactly which files are included; purchasing a PES alphabet alone does not provide an ESA file.

Do your ESA fonts work with Hatch 4?

Yes. Digitizing With Love ESA fonts are compatible with Hatch 3 and newer, including Hatch 4. Use the third-party ESA installation folder described above.

Do your ESA fonts work with Hatch 2?

No. Our ESA fonts require Hatch 3 or newer. Hatch's generic support instructions describe installation for some older ESA files, but that does not change the requirements of our fonts.

Can I install an ESA font directly on my embroidery machine?

No. Use compatible Hatch or Wilcom software to create the lettering, then export the completed design in a machine stitch format your machine accepts.

Can I resize an ESA font?

You can adjust lettering size in compatible software, but stitch quality depends on the font design, size, fabric, and settings. Follow the size guidance for the particular font and sew a sample when changing sizes significantly.

Do I need to install a third-party ESA font the same way as a Hatch font pack?
